Bewildered, boxed in, and breaking through

There are two main roadblocks when it comes to solving problems in business or life.

The first is bewilderment: This is the sensation of not really knowing where to begin or what approach to take when it comes to sorting out a problem.

The second is being stuck or boxed in: You know what you want to do but it doesn’t seem to be working.

While sometimes it may feel you are the only one who struggles with problems in this way, it is a completely natural – and necessary – process if you want to find real breakthroughs.

David Perkins, a research professor at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and author of “The Eureka Effect: The Art and Logic of Breakthrough Thinking” says most solutions take time and persistence. He was recently featured in Fast Company magazine.

“Struggle and insight go together,” says Perkins, “You are not likely to achieve an insight, unless you’ve struggled with the problem some.”

Struggle is part of the process, but Perkins offers a handful of strategies that can help you arrive at those breakthrough moments faster.

1. Expand Your Search
Research has shown that allowing group members to brainstorm and think about a problem on their own before discussing it with the group leads to better results and prevents biases. Also try random stimulation. Use a random word or concept to think about the challenge at hand and stimulate free-associative thinking.

2. Change The Problem
If you’re solving the wrong problem, you can’t arrive at the right solution. Perkins recommends focusing intensely on the problem by simply asking the question: what’s the real problem here? Analyze it thoroughly. Try to see the problem from several angles.

3. Reach Out To Others
Reach out to experts or friends, read up on different but related topics. Perkins calls this “deliberate cross fertilization.” Reach out to someone who works slightly outside your field who might be able to offer an alternative opinion.

4. Get Away From The Problem
Breakthrough moments often come from taking a break. You can make new and unfamiliar connections by putting yourself in new surroundings. Time away also allows you to recover your energy and gives you space to think differently.

To struggle with a problem is normal. But time, talent and the tactics above can help you break through and find real solutions.

Have a great week.
