Communicating with kids

While it’s nice to be recognized today for being a father, it also seems like a natural time for some continuing education as well.

Knowing how to talk naturally with children – at any age – is a valuable skill. It shows interest, empathy, and kindness. It makes them feel that you really care.

Here are few ideas for improving communications with kids:

  1. Talk during the in-between. Use the quiet and intimate moments of your day to just talk. There are plenty when you think about it: driving to school, cooking together, taking a way, and of course, bedtime. These times and activities make it easier to talk because you’re in motion and you aren’t looking at each other.
  2. Observe talking styles. Some kids are better talkers at different times of the day. Some like mornings, some don’t. Try to engage when they are best and most open to it.
  3. Be a person. Express emotion. Participate with genuine responses that make them feel safe and want to share more.
  4. Talk about yourself. Talk about yourself if you want your kids to talk about themselves. Open up about your day to be more relatable.
  5. Give advice. Kids crave direction so offer it, suggest it, give it.
Thanks to all the men, husbands and dads out there who communicate and make big differences in the lives of their friends, families and communities every day.

Wishing all dads a very Happy Father’s Day!

Have a great week.
