Deconstructing happiness

We all seem to know happiness when we see it and experience it.

But what are the core elements that really create happiness in each of us?

Martin Seligman has often been called the father of positive psychology and is the current director of the positive psychology center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Seligman has designed the PERMA model which lays out the five core elements of psychological well-being. He believes that these foundational components help people reach a life of meaning, fulfillment, and well – happiness.

Knowing about them can help us better balance these elements in our own lives.

P – Positive Emotion
This is the ability to be optimistic and view the past, present, and future in a positive perspective. It’s also important to distinguish between pleasure and enjoyment – two key building blocks in this element of the model. Pleasure is connected to satisfying bodily needs for survival; such as thirst, hunger, and sleep. Whereas enjoyment comes from intellectual stimulation and creativity.

E – Engagement
We need activities that foster our full engagement. Engagement is important for us to learn, grow and nurture our personal happiness.

R – Relationships
We are social beings that thrive on connection, love, intimacy, and a strong emotional and physical interaction with other humans. Building positive relationships with family and friends is important to spread love and joy. These relationships also provide support in difficult times.

M – Meaning
Purpose and meaning are important to living a life of happiness and fulfillment. When we expand beyond our own needs and become part of something bigger than ourselves, we can reach new levels of happiness.

A – Accomplishments
A sense of accomplishment instills pride and fulfillment. Accomplishments also propel us to thrive and flourish and pursue additional goals and ambitions.

Knowing these elements and being aware of them is the first step towards more happiness. Adding to them faithfully is how you arrive there.

Have a great week.
