Do the work

Author Stephen King knows how to do the work. He has written 54 books. He’s sold more than 350 million copies of those books.

In his book “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” he shares his tips and tricks of the trade.

He recommends that aspiring writers should read a lot. They should also write a lot. Turn off the TV. And so on.

But this is my favorite quote on what it takes to be a good writer. King wisely, simply, plainly states:

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”

Though he’s specifically talking about writing, I think that applies to any of us, in any profession.

If you want to be good, at anything, you’ve got to show up and do the work.

Feeling lazy, show up and do the work.
Under pressure, show up and do the work.
Being criticized, show up and do the work.
Being celebrated, show up and do the work.
Think you know it all, show up and do the work.

We may not always feel like it, but we’ve got to show up, try, struggle, lose, win – and do the work.

Have a great week.
