Reconsider

Want to be right more often?

Then be prepared to change your mind more often, or at least be more open to it.

Jeff Bezos of Amazon says one-track thinking – trying to make a case for just one point of view – should be avoided.

Bezos has noticed that people who are right a lot of the time are those who often change their minds.

He shared this wisdom with the Basecamp, one of his favorite investments. Basecamp’s founder, Jason Fried, wrote about it in his own blog:

He’s (Bezos) observed that the smartest people are constantly revising their understanding, reconsidering a problem they thought they’d already solved. They’re open to new points of view, new information, new ideas, contradictions, and challenges to their own way of thinking.”

Egos and entrepreneurial cultures often teach us to develop a unique point of view and fight for our vision at all costs.

It’s hard to say “I’ve reconsidered my position. I’ve changed my mind. I was mistaken.”

Changing your mind can be time-consuming and uncomfortable, but not as painful as taking a seriously wrong turn and running the whole company into a ditch.

Have a great week.
